I forget who did it but I saw a video where somebody went around asking people if they were gluten free. They showed 10 people who said yes and none of them had remotely an idea of what gluten was or what effects it had.

It pretty funny how people insist on gluten free when they don't even know what the products were for. They just think gluten is really bad and probably has something to do with Monsanto.

I like this.
My summer job is in a resort area of a National Park, and there's a lot of the late-hippie/hipster movement about, so all the various bakeries and coffee shops, etc, go pretty nuts on the whole thing. My mom actually is intolerant, and while the whole thing is convenient for her because it means there's a lot of options available, she also finds it very frustrating watching people dicker over it because the huge "demand" leads to inflated prices, while therre's no evidence whatsoever that it's in any way healthier. Although that said, my dad went off gluten out of support for my mom (and to help keep it out of the house to avoid contamination) and has lost a decent amount of weight... but most likely because he doesn't get (or want) to eat as much of my mom's baking and pastries that she used to make and can't really any more.

Is it me, or did the crowd in this video unanimously agree that the brown people are dumb and the white people aren't? They even sided with SUPERJEW, and they were right exactly as often as randomness.

As someone who has been diagnosed with Celiac-Sprue Disease by an actual d0ctor after having a blood test, had 9, yes NINE colonoscopies and have maintained a gluten free diet since I was 7 years old I find this video offensive

I know people with celiac disease and this video isn't targeted at them or you. The whole point of the video is that there are millions of dumbasses now who are claiming to be "gluten intolerent" who have no idea what it is actually like to have Celiac's disease.

I'm aware this isnt targeting me but not many people are as aware as you and rope people like me in with the idiots portrayed in this video

As someone with celiac disease, I can attest to this phenomena from first-hand experience. Another factor is not being able to eat out as much. Do you know how much weight you can lose by simply making your own food 90% of the time? Even if you weren't gluten-free and didn't have celiac disease that would still happen

"Hey Denmoe - you've added to your outfits. I note that you're carrying a small ball peen hammer on your belt."
"It's just my gluten free ignorance adjuster. Pay no attention."
I have a friend with Celiac disease. Not fun. We've tried different things in the past knowing that it may or may not change anything. I think the change in diet itself was the biggest thing like when we went gluten/cow dairy free for a couple years. That was a huge learning curve, and taught us all kinds of other stuff. But it was just to see what it might do, not because we had to (though the Japanese ancestry side of the fam does have a couple issues, especially with dairy.)

Well, It is possible to be gluten intolerant without being celiac. But being gluten intolerant does not cause lasting damage. If I go off my gluten free diet for long enough I would need a portion of my colon removed, If you do you would just feel cruddy. Im not discounting non celiac gluten intolerance, Im just trying to make a distinction between the severity of the 2 conditions.

I get it. And like I say, I've seen the direct results of Celiac, and it sucks, including the trip to the ER for emergency surgery for my friend when his colon inflamed and stopped up.
I'm also am around a lot of new agers that kinda go off about this, so I know why the video got made (but like you said, it's a lumping kinda thing which isn't fair.)
But there is one thing I can't make fun of even though I may want to. Parent of kid X says that feeding kid X GF makes them more manageable. Maybe it's just their perception but when it comes to getting to the end of the day with kids (after raising 3), whatever makes them (kids or parents) feel better, whether it's true or not, is ok in my book.

Well the sample size is too small for me to draw any conclusions, but I took it as an indication that they thought muscular dudes and women are dumb, and scrawny guys and Jews are smart. But hey, whatever helps you mount that high horse.

I know n=4 is *way* too small to draw any meaningful conclusions, and I was just stirring up shit for its own sake, but the phenomenon is real.

My parents didn't eat out much before hand, though, unless we were already travelling into the city for something. We were in a small rural community... to put things into context, it would have been a 160 mile round trip to the nearest McDonalds. Even without special nutritional requirements, it was a big deal to eat out, and it didn't happen all that often.
